Losing is OK Too

Little Miss Sunshine written by Michael Arndt and directed by Johnathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, made in 2008, is a movie that follows a family determined to get their daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant. In order to do so, they take a cross-country trip in their VW yellow bus to which we see their family go through the highs and lows together.

The Little Miss Sunshine in this movie is Olive Hoover. An aspiring beauty pageant queen. Her family stopping at nothing to make her dreams come true. Her dysfunctional family consists of; Mom, Dad, Brother, Uncle, and Grandpa. The movie seems to depict the meaning of winners and losers. Olive's dad, Richard, is all about winning and wants her and her entire family to be the best they can. He gives out the message that basically, you can't be a loser.

As you continue to watch the movie, you'll notice that the Hoover family hasn't won actually anything in their lives. Spoiler alert, Uncle Frank tried to commit suicide and failed. Olive's brother Dwayne, took a vow of silence until he got into the Air Force Academy and comes to find out that he's colorblind. Her father didn't even get the job offer he put everything into. The film seems to just be about a dysfunctional family trying to keep their sanity during a road trip to a beauty pageant but could also be about society's depiction of "losers" could be winning just as much as the "winners" do.
Towards the end of the movie, we see that Olive isn't society's description of a beauty pageant girl. As she comes onto stage she's judged by the audience and everyone there. But, she doesn't even notice and continues to show them what she's got. Obviously, she doesn't win but that's not the point. You don't have to be a winner to enjoy what you're doing. That's what the movie is trying to show us.
