All Her Dying Lovers by Anna Benner and Eluned Zoe Aiano
Imagine a rumor starting about someone in the time of WWII and it still being talked about and known to this day. All Her Dying Lovers is just that. Czechoslovakia WWII, a woman getting her own revenge on Nazis. Anna Benner says "the story in question involves a nurse, Nazis, seduction and syphilis, but no-one can agree on what really happened". Told through many people in the Czech Republic, this Op-Doc illustrated in stunning animation, shows the story of a nurse who contracted an STI after being raped, who then got the brilliant idea of getting revenge against the Nazis. The animation in this short is truly beautiful, it shows every emotion of the woman and the narration of the many people being interviewed tells the audience every action she made. The Op-Doc and the many different endings each person is giving in the film shows how one single story of a person can be morphed into something completely different.
Toys of War by Andrew Berends
In this film, director Andrew Berends shows audiences the life of children of a refugee camp in South Sudan. These children fled there with their families during a war. Throughout this Op-Doc, Berends shows how the children have made different kinds of toys out of clay. The toys have changed from innocent little flowers and pots to tanks and soldiers. The innocence of these children have been taken away. Whether it be just little bit, it will be changed forever. This film has made me realize how privileged we really are. The director really makes you think of how fortunate we really are. This Op-Doc was very interesting and I enjoyed watching it.
Your pieces were short but effective and direct to the point. After reading what you wrote about All Her Dying Lovers, it interested me. The second one was a little light on detail and left me a little confused on what it was about. Overall nicely done.
